I found this profoundly satisfying on a level that will be completely inexplicable to anyone in the real world but I know you lot will understand.

Looks like the folks at The Guardian are not particularly fond of him either.

Quote from: Mr Right review
The dialogue is deep-fried cheese served in giant, clagging portions. The punchlines are often riotously off-key. In an early scene Martha, drunk after catching her boyfriend copping off with another woman, tries to coax her besties out for a restorative night on the town. “One of you hussies is getting fisted!,” she yells. At the press screening the resulting silence seeped into the soul.

Also, I saw in an interview of Grant Morrison by James Gunn a reference to this Morrisoncon appearance by Max. They don't actually stick the knife in, in the summary, but I don't think anyone left that room not thinking Landis was making a twat of himself.

this review of his newest joint also takes some extra time out to shit on ol' UTMK

Quote
There is no character named Igor in Mary Shelley’s novel, however, nor does Victor Frankenstein have any sort of lab assistant, hunchbacked or otherwise. So Landis has only the representation from earlier movies to riff on, along with his imagination. They don’t add up to very much.

Max Landis' haircut giddily explains for 30 minutes why his bad movies are everyone else's fault but definitely not his, Mike & Jay are there (presumably as hostages)

Jeez, does UTMK never shut up?

Whilst he is yammering away, I am also watching a documentary on TV with a segment about songbirds that have evolved to be carnivorous to peck at blood from open wounds on penguins.

It's all merging in my mind and seems to be very relevant.

The fact that he's involved in a Dirk Gently project is worse news.

I'm predicting an awkwardly wordy black comedy full of heavy-handed symbolism about conscience and dependency that climaxes in a neon-lit Parisian alleyway where Pepe has to fistfight his own dick

Since Max last appeared on RLM, two of his scripts have sold for eight million dollars, proving two old Hollywood adages: nobody knows anything, and when you fail, you fail upwards.

I don't know about his other movie, but a friend of mine read the script for one of those films about cops and orcs or something and said it was just as bad as all his other shit.

So I look forward to more whiny baby tweets when the box office and RT scores come in.

As I understand it, Netflix bought the whole project on spec and the director immediately rewrote the script himself to suit what he had in mind, so it might actually turn out ok.

Max really doesn't seem to understand the fundamentals of telling a story. He's good at connecting and selling disparate concepts that any other writer would reject as idiotic junk (cops v orcs! Assassin stoner comedy!) not so great at structure, pacing, characters, dialogue, all that stuff. And he's making an unbelievable amount of money out of it.
