A friend of mine bought a slab of salt:

Yep, that's a slab of salt. But she decided she didn't really have room for it, so now I have it. I've heard it's for cooking?? What can I do with a big salt?

I've seen slabs of salt used on lots of cooking shows, sometimes as part of the process, sometimes as the actual platform the food is served on. So, uh, I guess...learn some slab of salt recipes. Just stick huge slabs of meat on there, you know, cook stuff.

Alpine Ibexes climb nearly 90 degree angles to lick salt deposits of off mountainsides. They crave that mineral.

Stupid Ibexes. Don't they know they could get salt far more easily by drinking the blood of humans?

Having skimmed a post about how and why you should use these, I suggest the name So Dumb Chloride. Smash the thing to pieces and grate it over dishes as you would Parmesan. Except less, because it's salt.

Quote
LRK: Can I get it wet? How can I clean this thing?

MB: I put a giant 9-inch-by-9-inch-by-2-inch, 12-pound salt block in my dishwasher as an experiment. I closed the door, ran it, opened the door -- there was no salt block. Don't do that.

I can only assume that in an earlier, unrelated, experiment this guy tried to use his dick as a door-stop.

No doubt you could get something pretty scrumptious  if you knew what you were doing. However, (and no I don't know why I ended up reading so much about these, on Christmas day no less) I've seen reviews where the slab has arrived broken, or with an obvious flaw that means it breaks on the first use. Also, a suppliers' warning that there is a chance of the slab exploding the first time it's used.

No one, suppliers or users, are saying that these things are hard wearing, but pretty much the most optimistic forecast I saw claimed they may last up to 20-25 uses before becoming too thin or breaking. And they're expensive.

So what I'm saying is, keep it dry and somewhere where it will be safe from damage. One day, if you find yourself in a situation where you are obliged to give a pricey gift to someone you hate, you're sorted.

I hope this doesn't mean that your friend hates you.

Actually I took some earlier advice and made a burger on it. It was okay, but now I'm obligated to use the thing again soon because it's no longer wrapped up. I'll probably just end up throwing it out. No regrets!
