Story Essentials

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

* * * * * * * * * * *

I'm looking to find excuses to write again, and while I gave some thought to doing a forum Choose Your Own Adventure, a couple weeks ago I was reading one of the SA Adventure Game stories on the main site and combined with the lovely Nerd Poker thought an RPG where the forum controls the main character would be fun, and would maybe even let a FUDGE game unfold where more that three rounds of action occur.

What is FUDGE?: In short, it is an RPG system which  is light on numbers, instead using a system of descriptors to lay out abilities, and rolls of four dice with an equal chance of +1, 0 or -1 on them. Are you a Good athlete needing to cross a chasm of Great difficulty? Roll the dice and succeed on a +1. This allows for a bit more ability to keep the gameplay as more storytelling and less number crunching, and adds some flexibility in carrying out how those results play out.

So what are we playing?: I'm new to DM'ing, so I found a module for another system which I'll be adapting the characters/enemies in it into the Micro FUDGE system.

Where are we?: The game is set in a fairly standard tabletop RPG world full of elves and dwarves to be friends with, orcs and lizard people to be enemies with, and other things generally to be found in such a place. Our hero (term used lightly) lives in a small village on the outskirts of the kingdom. The town has been dealing with the occasional but increasingly common bouts of pestering and troublemaking from the various baddies in the woods around the village.

Who are those guys?: The rest of your initial party consists of three companions -- your personal bodyguard, sworn to protect the mayoral family; your childhood friend, freshly returned from the capital where he completed novice training as a mage; your trusty dog. They will be played by "the other players" which is to say they'll be played as NPCs by me.

Right, then, and we are?: You're the 20-something son of the town mayor, with aspirations of heroism, starting with solving the town's monster problem and with no regard for the fact you are not actually very talented at much of anything. Beyond that, the rest of the creation of the character will be the first thing put forth to the forum to decide on. All decisions and actions will simply be first-come, first-serve within reason.

So, before we get started, there are a few steps of the character creation process, starting with the most simple one -- what's your name?

Okay, so the next round of creation is setting our attributes and the number of gifts and faults for Roll Fizzlebeef to have. The attributes are basically the overarching fields of proficiency, gifts are positive special traits, and faults negative special traits. The ratings in the attributes will also have a small effect on the default values of Roll's skills, the more focused ratings of his abilities.

As a default, each attribute is a Fair rating, and he will have 2 faults and 4 gifts. To augment this, 8 FUDGE rolls were made, and the highest and lowest values were discarded. The remaining rolls are: +1, 0, 0, -1, -2, -3. So, yeah, Roll is gonna be a pretty incompetent hero.

An overview of the four attributes straight from the rules:
Quote
Acumen covers your mental capabilities such as intelligence, education,
perception and so on. It is used for spotting hidden objects, finding
crucial clues, solving puzzles and remembering facts.
Mastery deals with your physical coordination such as manual dexterity,
speed, reflexes, flexibility and overall agility. It is used for dodging
blows, simple tinkering and determining initiative in combat.
Presence is responsible for social interaction and extends to appearance,
charisma, empathy, willpower and determination. It is used for
determining initial reaction, resisting persuasion and seduction, and
quantifies attractiveness.
Vigor describes your physical power such as strength, health, constitution
and toughness. It is used to lift heavy objects, knock down
doors and to resist damage, illness, poison and fatigue.

I will update this sheet here throughout this process to show what skills are filled and which rolls are still to be assigned.

Roll Fizzlebeef
Acumen: Terrible
Mastery: Fair
Presence: Horrendous
Vigor: Fair
# of Gifts: 5
# of Faults: 2

I think we're all Roll together.

The fact that his name is also the act of rolling dice, which happens a fair amount in these kinds of games is already a terrible mistake. Good job team

Both remaining options will yield two Faults, and I know the horrible die rolls in his skills allocation, so I'll assume he gets the better of two options for the one where it makes a difference. I'll post his Skill baselines and Skill rolls shortly.

Roll Fizzlebeef
Acumen: Terrible
Mastery: Fair
Presence: Horrendous
Vigor: Fair
Gifts
 - Endowment for the Arts: Though Roll lacks any talent at the fine arts, his massive endowment allows him to perform other public displays, namely "wiener tricks" that are able to curry favor of other boors such as himself.
 - Really Loud Voice: Roll speaks in a booming voice, capable of overcoming the loudest noises like rushing water, cracking thunder, or other people trying to carry a polite conversation anywhere within earshot.
 - PhotoAssic Memory: Roll never forgets a butt.
 - Beginners Luck: Roll rolls three sets of FUDGE dice and applies the two best when attempting something for the first time.
 - Animal Magnetism: Having spent many years of his youth pretending to be various animals, often with ornate costuming, Roll will often attract animals around him to follow at his side.

Faults
 - Split Personality: Roll's behavior is erratic, as if his head is a hodge-podge of different voices all vying to decide what he does next.
 - That's What She Said: Roll has a need. A need for speed...and a need to fire off killer one-liners. All the time. At the completion of every action, Roll can't help but dish out one of those action hero zingers everyone loves so much.

Athletics: Poor
Ballistics: Fair
Combat: Terrible
Stealth: Fair
Science: Nonexistent
Repair: Mediocre
Interaction: Nonexistent
Manipulation: Horrendously Terrible
Medicine: Terrible
Pilot: Terrible
Art: Nonexistent
Knowledge: Nonexistent

Also, as I was filling that out, at first I was all "Oh, poor, poor, poor, poor, maybe he won't be as screwed as I thought oh, no, there it is."

+2 to stealth. We're dumb and bad at everything, maybe it will help if nobody ever knows we're there.
