I've decided to make a thread for Korean tv shows, I know there's a few of us who enjoyed The Genius and people might be interested in other shows too.

The Genius

http://bxrme.tumblr.com/post/69603754319/the-genius-1-2-subbed

13 people skilled at something play a game every week and are eliminated one by one. If you've seen Steelfans forum/IRC version of it you have a rough idea how it goes but the show itself is great with drama and reaction shots and the overuse of certain songs in the soundtrack.
Two seasons so far with a third starting later this year I believe.

Crime Scene

http://bxrme.tumblr.com/post/85558507538/crime-scene-subbed

A new show, only one episode so far but they will be added to the link above as they're translated. Six people take the identity of six suspects in a murder and have to find evidence against the others while keeping their own name clear. Looks good so far, bit more of a slow burn than The Genius.
Please use spoiler tags when talking about the most recent episode of this.

Running Man

In this show, there's the regulars, plus usually guests from Korean popular culture, and they are tasked with performing missions and games every week. Sometimes in teams, sometimes working individually and occasionally all working together as a team.

These could be anything from making a cup of coffee using wildly different sized spoons chosen by random number selection to measure out the coffee and sugar, and then in two teams, relaying the drinking of said coffee to see which team can finish first; running around a foreign countries marketplace trying to buy an item which they have only been told the foreign name of, being unable to speak the language; to finding the clues in a prison cell in order to make their escape, finding the plans to prison, and the key to freedom.

Then there's usually an elimination round, where you get people out by ripping off the large velcro name tags on their backs. There's sometimes a spy involved here, especially when it's a team race.

There are episodes in various places online, I've been watching them on Daily Motion. Here's a handful if you're interested.

Episode 1 http://kshowonline.com/kshow/14-[engsub]-running-man-ep.1
The pilot episode, so a good one to get to know most of the regulars. Some great games, such as a coat rack relay. The two teams are locked in a shopping centre overnight, and the team that does best is allowed to leave in the morning.

Episode 13 Part 1 Part 2
This is apparently one of the better episode to first get into the show with. It has a few more low key games to start with and a great chase sequence at the end. It's been described as Running Man Die Hard.

If you've any suggestions for similar shows or just other good Korean shows feel free to post here, or just discuss any above that you're watching.

Given this is covering multiple shows, I'm gonna go ahead and throw this in a labelled spoiler since that seems the best way to not make the thread a minefield:

(click to show/hide)

Also, I'll throw this outside spoiler since it doesn't refer to anything specific that happened, but if everyone who watched the first two seasons is also watching this, we should try to do some group watchings over Skype. Sam and I did it once in season two and it was fun talking out the games in real time.

Okay so I'm catching up at ~an episode a day. I won't be reading anything until I'm live, but here are my thoughts on episodes 3-5 of Genius.

PS - BSam, my not actually reading anything about it will extend to facebook messages until I'm live, just as fair warning.

I'm live. I'll post my episode thoughts probably tomorrow, when I have time to sit down and remember the order of the games and in turn what I thought of them.

Genius S4 is almost on us, and here is a list of the people involved

(list and notes stoled from someone on SA in the genius thread.)

Jinho (former pro videogame player)

- it's Jinho
- 1st place The Genius 1, beat Kyungran
- lol if you don't have a crush on Jinho

Kyungran (newscaster)

- 2nd place The Genius 1, lost to Jinho
- super solid player (even if not very flashy like ~~the geniuses~~)

Junseok (harvard dude)

- eliminated in the first episode on The Genius 1
- huh

Jungmoon (super high IQ person)

- was eliminated early in The Genius 1
- that one girl who couldn't bluff for shit and basically gave away the zombie game
- I have no idea why she's back

Sangmin (some kind of 90s korean hip hop dancer)

- 3rd place The Genius 1, lost to Kyungran
- 1st place The Genius 2, beat Yohwan
- king of betrayals, somewhat smart and a genius at convincing a bunch of people to do whatever was convenient to him.
- got the best fashion sense

Yohwan (the NUMBER ONE pro videogame player)

- 2nd place The Genius 2, lost to Sangmin
- goofy dude with absolutely no dignity
- so bad at the main games it hurt to watch
- still got second place somehow

Junghyun (former newscaster and congressman)

- 3rd place The Genius 2
- goofy old dude who didn't stand out much
- I have no idea how he got so far but who cares, dude is chill as fuck

Yoonsun (some kind of law person, quiz show winner)

- coldly beat Hweejong (lion math teacher) in the first episode of The Genius 2
- lost to Yohwan on that laser chess thing
- she still seemed to be better than Yohwan in general though

Dongmin (comedian who likes to scream)

- 1st place The Genius 3, beat Hyunmin
- impressive memory skills.
- quite smart and also got good social skills. probably the most balanced player in The Genius history

Hyunmin (student)

- 2nd place The Genius 3, lost to Dongmin
- really smart dude
- ruthless tactics to win via targetting specific players. didn't get many allies for this

Kyunghoon (who cares)

- titty god

Yoohyun (poker player)

- somewhat good and active player but totally overshadowed by Hyunmin
- underestimated a girl (Yeonjoo) and lost lol. it was glorious

Yeonseung (chinese medicine doctor)

- 3rd place The Genius 3, destroyed by Hyunmin
- used to have the best hair (seriously look at that)
- other than being a nice guy and the biggest underdog, he was mostly a mediocre player I guess
- still better than most players in the show's history because he's THE MENTALITY KING

I don't know anything about Korean game shows, but those two video game dudes had a pretty extensive rivalry thing in Starcraft and are both pretty famous in Korea, so that is cool that they are on this show
