We have some CK2 LP threads but not a general CK2 thread. This is now that thread. Please use it to discuss CK2 or brag about your exploits in CK2 or complain about having all your sons die of typhoid in CK2.

I'm super new to CK2 and Paradox games in general (this is my first).  I played it a bit last year but didn't really "get it" and quit after about 6 hours.  But since it's been the talk of the town lately I read a few tutorial LPs last night to learn a bit more about what I was missing, and all of them started in Ireland.  So I rolled up an Irish duke and today I became King of Poland by mistake.

(click to show/hide)

Now that I understand the game a little better (and am taking it a little slower) I am enjoying it more than the first time I started it up. The accidental taking over of Poland was nice but the entire war probably could have been avoided if I had been smarter about who my Duchess married/who I gave land to. I'm not sure if I want to continue as King of Pol-ireland or go back a few auto saves and revoke my husband's ownership of Oriel and avoid the entire war. I think I might be happier working my way up to a big country rather than stealing one accidentally.

Edit: Of course I just realized that even if I revoke my husband's title, my son will still be heir to Poland.  So I guess I'm Polirish either way.

I'm currently slowly trying to form the empire of Brittania having started as a ruler designed King of Scotland. I've got all of Scotland, all of Ireland, and have eaten significantly into northern England and Wales.

The new DLC is going to be called "The Old Gods," move the starting date back two hundred years, and let you play as pagans. Notably Vikings.

Reposting this from the LP thread because why not

Quote
Not sure if it interests anyone, but here is a spreadsheet with all the different tactics in the game and here is a post that goes into detail about army composition.

The combat mechanics are actually fairly interesting but to get the most out of it you have to specialise your holdings in terms of what buildings you upgrade and spend more time on army management, sorting out all your vassal levies from your handcrafted personal levies/mercs/retinues.

To summarise without getting into the raw numbers, units apart from Light Infantry are divided into 2 groups, Light (Light cav, Horse archers and plain old Archers) and Heavy (Heavy infantry, Pikemen and Heavy cav). The proportion of units you have in each group on each flank determines what strategies you can use, with usually just 1% being the threshold for a strategy being able to be selected. Light is primarily used in Skirmish and Heavy in Melee. There are no tactics for Pursuit, and only cavalry will really do significant damage there.

Strategies are given weights, which are then multiplied by various factors, like leader marshal or having a certain % of a unit type. This stacks multiplicatively (I think), so if it's x3 for having 40%, 50% or 60% HI in a flank then having 50% HI gives you x9 to the weight, before other factors. Weights are not % chances, if you're eligible for 11 tactics, and one has a weight of 40 and the rest have a weight of 1 each for a total of 50 then you have an 80% chance of selecting that first tactic, assuming I can do maths.

If your leader has a Martial below 8 you're probably better with no leader at all, as that's the threshold for getting multipliers to bad tactics. Tactics usually apply about a x2 modifier to a units attack and/or defense, and bad tactics usually make that a negative modifier. Check out the bottom of the spreadsheet for trait tactics.

For the most part, the advice given is to pick 2 of the 3 unit types in each group and focus on those, as most tactics apply a negative modifier to the attack of at least one of the other unit types. Archers and LC don't play nicely together, but LC are still useful in Pursuit and also horsies are cool.

If you ever have more than 60% of your flank total made up of archers the enemy gets the 'Charge on Unprotected Flank' tactic available, which moves combat into melee phase immediately and is as bad as it sounds. It's one of the few times LI are considered in tactics.

There are also unique cultural tactics. Scots are good with pikes, English and Welsh characters have access to special and very lethal bow tactics and the Altaic group (mongols) can move combat back into Skirmish phase because they are huge jerks. A few culture groups, notably Russians and Iberians, miss out on anything, but generally whatever units your cultural building/retinue gives bonuses to is the unit you have special tactics for.

If you have your character in battle you have the chance to pick up commander traits. Of these, the [Terrain] Expert ones are some of the best as they give a base 20%, multiplied my Martial, bonus to all units in your flank when on that terrain. If you want to see terrain press 'q' and hover over a province, or maybe click on it, I can't remember. I don't know if it's been patched but the [Unit] Leader traits do nothing, except for Cavalry Leader which gives access to a charge tactic. Unpredictable Leader is also bad as it has as much of a chance as giving you a bonus as a penalty.

If it all seems like too much effort to specialise holdings and sort out flanks just hire mercs, upgrade whatever and drown the bastards in the corpses of your peasants.

Australia has a serious gap in its defence against timber refugee boats because over-the-horizon radar can't pick them up and current ship and aircraft radars have limited range.

I played this game for the first time via demo today. I was having a great time as the King of Poland, expanding my bloodline and my kingdom to the sea. I even had my 8-year-old son with me on the battlefront because I was a hands-on father. Then some distant brother-in-law asked me to go to war with him and the game crashed when I tried to see the details.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I will be picking this up when I get some money.

Snips, this game goes on sale roughly every other month. The next expected sale is around the 30th when they do a large sale to promote their newest game, afterwards there should be some kind of spring sale, then another sale in May when CK2 gets the next expansion

Also, to help me out with their silly little pyramid scheme thingy for EU4, could you be so kind as to sign up for their newsletter under my link here:

If I get 10 I will give one of you the EU3 with all dlc reward. You have to actively request any of the email spam.

edit: sorry for this, but i really like these games and you have to opt in on the email spam, so please do it. also, one or two times a year they give away a steam key for a game they publish in their newsletter.

Done. I'll take the EU3 copy if nobody else wants it bad. I think I had pirated it a few years ago on Fermun's advice.

Ok, I've hit my 10, I will get a free copy of EU3 to give out come whenever that is distributed. Thanks, jerks!

I like this game, and starting a minimum of 1 week from today will look to start setting up a weekly game. The idea is that I will host with every expansion, and you can play anyone starting at the earliest start date. If your dynasty dies out, you are out for the remainder of that session, if you can't make it a week I will try to find cover for you. If you're interested in the idea give a general outline of best day and time for you. Give time estimates in some sensible time zone such as Eastern or Pacific so I have less work to do figuring this out.

I've been wanting to get this game for quite sometime now, and if anybody else has had their eye on it amazon is having an insane deal. For $15 right now you get CKI, CKII and all the DLC. Evidently it's a savings of some $133.

Just in general amazon is having tons of awesome deals right now.

CK1 is entirely superseded by CK2 and the next CK2 expansion comes out soon. It's an extremely fun game, you should get it.

The newest expansion is out as of today, it's very good, and the game is on sale right now too. The base game and all DLC except the stuff released today (The Old Gods, Norse Faces, Norse songs) is 75% off, that means you can pick up the game and all but the latest expansion pack for $20 or the base game alone for $10

edit: Amazon.com has a pack of Steam codes for $15, base game and all but the 3 dlc things released today.

JonasSalk, Mid-Boss and I have been doing some multiplayer, I think it's a blast, vikings are so much fun. KILL ALL CHRISTIANS/MUSLIMS/TENGRIISTS/SUOMENUSKOISTS/ROMUVAISTS/SLAVIC PAGANS/ZOROASTRIANS. Burn Venice, Rome, and Genoa every year! Sacrifice your twin to Odin! Find a +2 axe! Kill Cthulhu!

I bought The Old Gods. It is pretty cool. I am pretty bad at not getting invaded by the vikings.

I just formed Finland starting as the High Chief in Karelia using the ruler creator thingy. But my dude had an affinity for having dudes, so the gavelkind succession that is definitely going to happen sooner or later (dude's fifty now) is going to cause some fun. Sweden is swelling, and what will eventually be denmark is pretty powerful too.

Can that stlye pagan do concubines? I like to marry post-menopausal old women then just use concubines to have children with. I especially like having a bunch of lustful young concubines whenever I'm homosexual. Once you have your succession secured, just set aside your concubines and you don't have to worry about gavelkind fucking you over. I usually do 2 sons, revoke the title of my least-liked priest, then set my youngest son to be the priest. Priest sons can't inherit unless they are the oldest, so your gavelkind wont split shit up and should your oldest son die, your youngest takes charge anyhow.

Yeah they can, Suomenesko seems pretty similar to Norse albeit with a few less fun options.

I'll keep that in mind, smart. Also that post is the most ripe for the Out of Context Thread picking I've ever seen.

I may go Zoroastrian or something next. Old Gods is tough (a lot of large wars) but fun.
