Thor: Ragnarok

Upside: It's hilarious.

Downside: It's too hilarious.

Which is to say, the (consistently funny) comic spoofing of pompous superhero epics ends up undermining a legitimately epic story that could have been one of the all-time-greats. There's great character work, intriguing if undercooked anti-colonial themes, and some tremendous shake-ups to the status quo of Thor's world and our universe, all of which is thrown under the bus of a nonstop array of jokes. It's undeniably entertaining, but could have been genuinely powerful if anything here had any weight.

But on the other hand, you can't not like a movie where the dystopian tyrant of a garbage planet is played by Jeff Goldblum at his Jeff Goldblumiest, or Tessa Thompson rocking the role of a constantly drunk Valkyrie, or Cate Blanchett chewing every bit of scenery she can get her teeth on.
