I just saw Doctor Strange and liked it, pretty basic as far as an origin story, but lots of cool visuals and pretty good casting throughout, except maybe the villain, who never ceased looking like a bad glam metal makeup job or a shitty last minute Halloween do, really wasted the potential of someone like Mads Mikkelsen.

Lots of fun little easter eggs in the movie.

Also,

I give it a recommend, and the visuals play really well on the big theater screen.

I saw THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN earlier and i cannot recommend it enough. It's about as honest and acerbic as coming-of-age/high school movies can be. Hailee Steinfeld finally has another great performamce under her belt after the promise she showed in TRUE GRIT.

I saw La La Land. It was a fascinating homage with two great lead performances, but I don't think is stands up as a complete movie on its own. Overall, I liked it but I probably won't watch it a second time.

For a musical it has some pretty forgettable music and dancing, even though the visual design is great and I want to see Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone fuck (by which I mean they have amazing on-screen chemistry).

I ended up seeing it twice. The first time I really liked it to the point where I could ignore its flaws because I was so surprised by the positive aspects, but the second time around I really noticed its failings. It's still one of the better movies of the year, but next time I feel like watching it I'll probably just throw on An American in Paris or a Jacques Demy film.

Did you also notice the camera moving way too fast during the rotating shots, the lip sync being completely off a few times when characters are talking in the distance, and one shot of Ryan Gosling being slightly out of focus when they're eating dinner?

Oh also I liked it too.

I don't think it was supposed to be a musical in the pure sense, but a nod to the big studio-ran movies of the golden era that had like, two song and dance numbers in them. You know, the bad ones.

It's half homage to Old Hollywood, half Damien Chazelle's obsession with jazz music. The scene where they're walking at night and just start tap dancing is the Fred Astaire-iest thing ever, and Gosling even brings up how Charlie Parker got his nickname just like they did in Whiplash.

Oh also the way black people are used as wallpaper to denote jazz authenticity was gross as fuuuck. I liked John Legend's character though and I wish he had a larger/any impact on Gosling's character arc.

Watched the RiffTrax version of Twilight. It's a completely shit film so them ripping it to pieces was actually pretty funny throughout. I consider this the definitive version of Twilight.
