End of Watch

I saw this the other day and I thought it was pretty good. The plot seems a little aimless at first but then things you thought might be totally incidental wind up becoming important and the story kind of starts to gel together. I thought it developed in a fairly realistic and organic way that's pretty interesting and not like any other cop movies I can think of.

The acting and writing were both extremely good. You almost forget that the two leads are acting. Their dialogue is so good and natural that they really disappear into their characters.

My only gripe is the shaky cam. It's actually used to good effect in a few scenes, but the rest of the time it's split between tolerable and really annoying. Overall it was a good flick though.

Okay but was it like good good or sappy, white-washed manipulative Spielberg good the way the trailer makes it look?

I thought it was good good. Pretty much every big name actor in it (and theres a fuckload of em) gives a great performance, the story has some good high and low moments, and everything just looks fantastic (classic Spielberg-style).

It's a lot better than War Horse if you want something to compare it to.

Saw Seven Psychopaths yesterday. Still trying to figure out what Martin McMcDonagh was trying to say with the movie. I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed In Bruges, which was a gem of a movie, but it wasn't a bad movie either. The first two-thirds of the movie was hilarious and suspenseful in equal measure, but the last third was just weird. In spite of the performances, which were all excellent to watch (Sam Rockwell is some sort of a genius), I think the point of the movie went over my head.

My wife and I went to see Argo tonight and really enjoyed it.  I'm probably going to buy the book of the actual story because even if half of it is real it's still too awesome to be real.

I saw a ton of awesome stuff at the Chicago International Film Festival. Here are the best ones I saw. If you can find them, you should watch them:

The ABC's of Death

26 people were given $5000 and a letter of the alphabet. They were then told to pick a word starting with that letter and create a short film based on that word. Some of them are pretty dumb. Others are fucking hysterically funny. The rest were intense as shit and frankly kinda hard to watch. Overall, pretty fuckin cool. Also, it was rated NC-17 and for good reason.

(There's no official trailer, but here's one of the shorts in the film to give you an idea.)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCmMebE0pIg" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCmMebE0pIg</a>

Maniac

Elijah Wood loses his fucking mind and stalks and scalps a bunch of women. Oh and almost the whole thing is shot in the first-person. Super violent and supremely insane.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPdzB1oGifw" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPdzB1oGifw</a>

Holy Motors

I have absolutely no fucking clue what this movie is about, but I was completely captivated throughout the entire film. It's visually stunning, wonderfully acted, and just generally pretty goddamn strange. It's definitely a must-see film, and I challenge everyone to figure out what the fucking plot is.

(This trailer gives you no clues whatsoever)

Any Day Now

This is probably one of the saddest movies I've ever seen and holy shit it was so good. I was honestly not expecting much of it and it ended up being one of my favorites of the festival. It's about a gay couple in the 70's trying to get legal custody of a young boy with down syndrome from his abusive, drug-using mother. So yeah get ready to want to kill yourself when it's over. Also Alan Cumming is in it.

(No trailer unfortunately. But trust me go see it)

Antiviral

This was definitely one of the weirdest films I've maybe ever seen. Like I can't even describe one part of it without describing all of it because the whole thing was just fucking weird. No one even clapped when it was over. Everyone just looked around whispering "Jesus christ what the fuck was that movie." but you know, in a good way. Fun fact: All of the needle injections in this movie were real. So that's fun.

Shit I forgot one.

Dragon

It's the new Donnie Yen movie. He fights some guys and acts pretty good. That's about all you need to know.

I think Maniac is a remake of this hidden gem. I saw it on Netflix Instant like 6 months ago, not sure if it's still there or not. It's pretty rad. Slow, intense, and full of cool 70s snap zooms

So um, I haven't read The Cloud Atlas, but is the borderline racist makeup part of the story?

I googled and I see that there was a controversial saga about "yellow face" that dogged the making of the movie, I don't have an issue as such with the the fact they did it, it's more that I honestly believe whoever did Hugo Weaving's face has never seen an asian person.
