The point of this thread is to broadly introduce and discuss films that will be coming out in cinemas in the near future. I will be bringing up a lot of films as they come into Australian cinemas, but luckily these days many American films are released in Australia at the same time.

We're going to be talking about a lot of movies in this thread. Feel free to bring up something that you're looking forward to. If you feel a release will be worthy of its own thread you can ignore this thread and create a new thread for it. If we get many posts on a specific movie, we'll split it out.

But as it stands we're not having very much new film discussion here and this thread should help create some.

First up, the Snowtown Murders is coming out in cinemas in the USA next week. It was released in Australia about a year ago. This film has a solid/morbid script, and the two male leads are great newcomers. It is based on a true story about a deranged individual who destroys many lives, and the kid who he takes under his wing. Snowtown is a small town outside of Adelaide, the capital of my state, where they found bodies decomposing in barrels of acid in an abandoned bank.

Shame is the second feature length film by Steve McQueen (not that Steve McQueen). It was out in cinemas here last week. It's good, but very depressing. It's about a man whose entire life is tailored to his sex addiction. When his sister comes to stay with him unannounced, he realizes that he has a problem. Much like my last recommendation, this is an emotional, depressing film, and boasts good writing and acting.

Miss Bala is a Mexican film released to film festivals in 2011, and just recently released on DVD. It's about a beauty pageant hopeful from Tijuana who is captured by a Mexican cartel and pitted against the DEA.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g357MHuj8WE" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g357MHuj8WE</a>

It's a very stark and gritty film. The director utilizes a lot of long, static takes and tons of tracking shots so if that's your thing, then visually this is right up your alley. The style also lends itself to the slow pace and helps keep you in the main character's shoes. I definitely recommend you do a watch on this movie, especially if you're into crime thrillers and good foreign shit.

So The Avengers came out, I don't know if you guys have heard about it. It's got all the great superheroes like Steel Dude, Handsome Patriot, Hammer Bro, Smasher, Hot Girl, Cyclops Man, and Jeremy Renner With A Bow And Arrow.

Basically throughout the whole movie all I could think was "Holy shit this owns" and I think you should watch it. The plot is pretty standard rate comic book movie stuff but the action scenes are ridiculous and it's just a blast to see all the Avengers onscreen at once. Also Whedon doesn't over-Whedon the script and make it too cute or referential so that's good.

Go for the balls-to-the-wall action, stay because a man with a helmet with deer horns on it calls Scarlett Johansson a "witless quim".

Lawless

I have high hopes for this one.  Screenplay by Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat, I think the last time these guys teamed up was on "The Proposition" which I enjoyed very much.

Although it stars Shia LaBeouf, I can't recall a single film that he has been in that I enjoyed.

Also Tom Hardy trying on another unusual accent for size.

75% on RT.  For comparison, "The Proposition" is at 87% so maybe my hopes are not so high.

I think this comes out in the U.S. in the next day or so, but I won't get to see it (in Australia) for a Month or two.
If anyone has seen it, is this worth catching at the cinema?

I've seen it. To sum it up, some of the storytelling and characters could probably be improved on, but it makes up for it with lots of kick-ass cowboy shoot-em-up action.

End of Watch

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf2K9GzgiF0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf2K9GzgiF0</a>

I saw a prescreening of this tonight and goddamn is it good. I was expecting some kind of cop action movie but it's way more than that. It's funny as hell when you listen to Jake and Michael banter in the car, and it still gets crazy emotional and a couple times pretty fucking disturbing when they get into all the gang violence. (Also I met Michael Peņa at the screening and he was a pretty cool guy. Like a mexican Mark Ruffalo.) Heads up though if you get motion sickness from shaky cams or whatever be prepared for an extreme amount of it during the more intense scenes.

So yeah see this shit when it comes out.

I did a watch on The Master today. Sat by myself in a theater with a bunch of old men. It was hella good. Great lead performances and beautiful cinematography. Wish I'd seen it in 70 MM. It was very abstract and open-ended and in that way I dug it more than There Will Be Blood because it opens up a lot more discussion about its themes and meaning.

Cloud Atlas looks pretty ballin'. It's directed by the Wachowski's, who did the Matrix.
