fuck your star wars thread i made a proper one, fucker
2  Forum / AV Club / Star Wars: The Trouble With Porgs on: Today at 02:49 am
Am I the first to make that joke? Just a quick Google here... and no. Of course not.

So, I saw this Friday morning at 8:30 AM because of course I fucking did, and overall it's good, but I think I liked The Force Awakens more than this one. One of the problems with The Last Jedi is it tries too hard to insert funny moments throughout. The goddamn porg things could be removed from the movie entirely and it wouldn't affect the plot. They are in there solely to be cute and (obviously) sell merch and do funny little things. Wouldn't A New Hope have been better if after Luke found his aunt and uncle murdered, the camera panned over to a little porg that started screaming? The caretakers of the Jedi temple island are also pointless and are in there just for a couple funny scenes. I'd prefer the movie without both them and the porgs. But also, a part of me that I hate also loves the little things because some goddamn asshole designed them to be super fucking cute.

So far it sounds like I'm kind of shitting on this movie, but that's because I haven't gotten to the good stuff yet, and most of that is all spoilers, so just as a warning, this thread will be spoilers from here on out. It's really hard to talk in depth about a Star Wars film without spoiling things anyway, and honestly, you fucking know already if you want to see this or not.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

One of the things I really liked about the movie is that Rey's parents just turned out to be a couple of nobodies that didn't want her and dumped her. It always made the universe feel small when important shit always happened to the Skywalker family, and the fact that the light side could rise up in some rando to meet the darkness within Kylo Ren is nice.

I liked that the film isn't just a beat by beat remake of The Empire Strikes Back, which is kind of how it looked from the trailers. I liked the part where the good guys had a plan to disable the hyperspace tracker and it failed miserably instead of succeeding in the last second like what happens in every film ever. I was actually pretty shocked that they killed off Snoke in this one. And I think it worked that they didn't really answer who he was. He doesn't have some secret real identity or anything. He's just some fucking force using dickhead with a hard on for the Empire and Darth Vader. Rey fighting Luke and briefly teaming up with Kylo was also unexpected. I like when a movie doesn't turn out to be exactly what I thought it would be!

My only other problems than the porg were that they never answered how Maz had Luke's lightsaber (answered in episode IX i guess???), how R2-D2 and the old guy from The Force Awakens each had a piece of a map to Luke Skywalker (doesn't seem like it'll get a proper answer if they didn't answer it in this movie before Luke did the same vanishing death that Yoda did), and the goofy looking CGI when Leia turned out to not be dead and used the force to pull herself back inside that ship. It's not entirely unrealistic since you can actually survive in space for a bit, but it just looked super weird. Also, it's funny that they had already planned this, because I totally thought in that scene that they just said "eh, fuck it" and were killing her off in this one.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the star war for now ok bye i love you

You guys need to shorten your posts down to just a few words and a picture. Like so:

I'm a science nerd and I play around with stuff like this:

Actually, if you can do it with just pictures that's even better.

i was worried cracked's writing quality would take a hit after all these layoffs, but one of their remaining columnists, CRACKED Store, is still churning out the hits!

i don't really have any love for cracked anymore obviously, but it sucks that some dumb company bought a thing they didn't understand for more money than it was worth and are now destroying any value it had by getting rid of lots of people that made it good

I am assuming the guardians at least wont actually come to earth and just be there for space thor stuff at the start and jet off, as that seems like the first character overload problem.

They do come to Earth. The leaked trailer earlier this year showed scenes with them around all the other characters.

But if its bad I will get to pwn nerds online like Nav/Bsam who insist its not, so win win really.

I don't just give every superhero movie a pass like certain people (EFHRK) insist I do. As an example, I saw Justice League the other week and it fucking suuuuucked.

the whole movie is in the trailer and Thanos looks bad.

I really don't see that at all. The trailer never shows Thanos with all six stones, there's so much unexplained stuff in it, and any of the original main characters could be killed off. The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers pretty much laid out their entire hand, but not this one.

Also, I think Thanos looks fine.

Well, this already looks like it'll be the best movie of 2018. Maybe ever.

Hey, The Lego Movie is pretty damned good.

Also, being able to port purchases over to other digital retailers is nice. There was the UV locker system, but Google Play, iTunes, and Amazon Video never got into UV. Vudu and FandangoNow are the only two major retailers left that link to UV, and FandangoNow fucking sucks, which basically leaves Vudu and makes UV libraries more useless.

If anyone here uses Vudu, Google Play, iTunes, or Amazon Video to buy digital copies, you can register an account at Movies Anywhere and connect it to your retailer of choice to get some free movies.

https://moviesanywhere.com

The first retailer connection gives you Ghostbusters (2016) and Ice Age for free, and connecting a second retailer gives you The Lego Movie, Jason Bourne, and Big Hero 6.

After you've connected your accounts through MA, any compatible titles will port over to the other retailers. The studios that have signed on so far are Disney, Sony, Fox, Universal, and Warner Brothers. The service only just launched, and more retailers and studios should be supported in the future.

Yeah, Blade Runner 2049 was great. I was skeptical when I first heard they were doing a sequel way back, but this movie really feels like it's earned its right to exist.

I burned through the first season of The Good Place over the weekend. Without spoiling anything, the basic premise is that the main character in the show accidentally ends up in The Good Place after she dies in a case of mistaken identity. Over the course of the show she tries to learn to not be such a piece of shit and also has to hide the fact that she doesn't belong there.

It starts kind of slow, and I was "meh" on it after the first two episodes, but just a couple episodes after that I was hooked. It gets pretty damned funny in its later episodes. After I finished that, I watched episode one of the just started season two. It will be interesting to see where they take the show.

American Vandal is amazing. It's a parody of those true crime documentaries, but the crime here is that someone spray painted dicks on 27 teachers' cars in the school parking lot. The student suspected gets expelled, and a fellow student starts a documentary to search out the truth. The comedy in it comes from the fact that it's played with a total poker face and takes itself 100% seriously. It is presented in earnest as a compelling whodunit.
