Title: Twitter
Post by: spaceboy on September 30, 2010, 12:33 am
Ok first of all, I know there is probably a twitter thread on Cracked. But I don't go to fucking Cracked. I haven't gone to fucking Cracked EVER. Okay, yeah... so there was this period where I did try to like it there, but it was too different than the old-school PWOT.

So very different...

Anyways. The purpose of this thread is you share twitter accounts. Mine is @rhyolight (http://twitter.com/rhyolight). I follow a lot of you already, but I would really like to put some effort towards cataloging all your interests, locations, and ages.

So is twitter something normal people do? Like, I held off on facebook for ages and ages until everybody I knew had an account and I was missing out on a basic way to communicate to people I know in a jovial common way (as well as make jokes with pwot/dm people) and gave in. Is it the same with twitter, will everyone I know have a twitter account in a couple of years and im missing out, or is it like myspace where it is/was and always will be for internet nerd fags?

I dont really get twitter, I see the appeal of following various cool and famous peoples twitters, but the friends aspect I dont follow, it just seems like exactly like what people already do with facebook (status wise, the only bit of facebook i follow) only on a whole new website I have to bother with. And half the time the people I know who twitter cross facebook it, so to speak, making it redundant.

You cant even play scrabble on twitter, I understand.

I am on twitter. I haven't talked in a few weeks, though I probably have my automatic thing from last.fm that says what 3 artists I listened to the most of the previous week. I use fermunation there because some bastard took fermun. At first I thought it might have been me and I had just forgot I had signed up before until I realized that the reset password thing doesn't send me the password  to any of my email addresses. It has never even tweeted but for some reason twitter isn't using their automatically getting rid of inactive accounts thing they say they do.

So, now everyone I know has twitter and is pestering me to join as i'm missing out. Nearly 18 months ahead of schedule.

I created an account, or went to rather and discovered I already had one linked to my email. I guess I signed up once a long time ago, never used it and forget it existed, so I resurrected it to totally repeat that pattern.

It's http://twitter.com/#!/FrostiestDog (http://twitter.com/#!/FrostiestDog)

I had a pwot person following me already, so I skimmed through there followers and so on trying to find a few pwot/dm people to add who I vaguely know. And added Victoria Coren. Now I have no idea what you do. I am so hip to modern things.

MGK, whos blog I like, posted something similar on twitter about Cheese being a stand out columnist over at cracked.

I guess without the context of the forums, you read the articles differently? Like maybe you assume the little asides about forbidding his wife to go outside dressed up because of his paranoid gangbang fantasies are ... satire?

With this and Wong revealing the secrets of sexism, I think we are in grave danger of the earth being knocked out of its orbit by the size of their egos.

Title: Re: Twitter
Post by: Molh on March 30, 2012, 07:38 pm
To be fair, though, I still think their columns can be reasonably interesting if you treat them with a pinch of salt, and conscientiously separate the authors from the works.

Sure, I still winch when I hear Wong's theories on masculinity, and I still wink knowingly when John Cheese talks about anger management, or how you should react to internet critics, because we all know he's basically talking to himself.

But on the whole they provide something that you don't quite get in the other parts of the internet, and, however flawed this something may be, I am not really surprised that they are getting traffic and recommendations from people who are drawn to this niche.

Title: Re: Twitter
Post by: Mr Gale on March 30, 2012, 07:59 pm
Well, Wong's last article, totally unaware and more than a little horrifyingly sexist is something you can get all over the internet.

But yes, removed from the personalities, i'm sure a lot of the (not horribly sexist) stuff has its charm. But the cracked formula makes it all a bit lifeless and dull even at its best, for me.

It's a terribly sad that a quote from a book that was first published in 1995 and was a best seller is somehow a "scoop".

Title: Re: Twitter
Post by: fermun on April 19, 2012, 09:30 pm
While I agree, it's mostly to do with the fact that Mitt Romney can't stop trying to defend and explain strapping his dog on the roof and hosing it down at a gas station when it shit itself. Romney's started to be somewhat hurt by it in the personal likeability polls and he's somehow incapable of ever saying he made a mistake. If he would say something like "yeah, that was a bad thing, I'm sorry" then his shit would go away, but he won't so he has to find a quote from a book where Obama says that the age of 6 or 7 his stepfather had him try dog meat.

The idea is that since his dog cruelty is hurting him, then he attacks Obama for the same thing and hopes people will get sick of them both and everyone will be forced to drop the story. It's based on different things though, the story about Romney's cruelty is all about an example for the narrative of Romney being an emotionless robot without empathy. Obama eating dog is being used as part of a narrative of him being a scary OTHER. If they were more directly comparable, I don't think the Republican response would sound so mean and petty.

I started reading The Secret Life of Pronouns (http://secretlifeofpronouns.com/) today. It's pretty interesting so far. The guy who wrote it is also one of the developers behind this:

http://analyzewords.com/

It loosely analyzes the state of mind via the language used in people's twitter feeds. I'm not really a twitter person but I thought you guys might have some fun with it. The few words of mine I did analyze seemed to say that I was very angry and I don't know where the christing hell that came from, what a stupid piece of crap.

Nedroid's "What if the internet had existed in Seinfeld times" jokes are pretty good.

Quote
George's parents friend him on Facebook

Better yet, George sends friend requests to his parents on Facebook, and they decline

George writes a scathing review on Yelp and is banned from the coffee shop

Jerry and Elaine start an OkCupid profile for George as a joke, he ends up getting matched with Marisa Tomei

The gang learns Kramer uses Bing instead of Google. When asked about it, he replies, "Google? What's 'Google?' Frankly it sounds made up"

George pretends to be the guys in Missed Connections ads, hoping the women will fall for it

Uncle Leo torrents movies and says it's okay because all old people do it

George gets into relationship with a frequent texter. He dumps her because he's only willing to pay for the cheapest data plan

George accidentally forwards his new girlfriend an unflattering photo of his privates. "Do women know about JPG compression?!"

The gang spends an entire episode waiting for a Chinese restaurant's website to load

So Ben Kuchera of Penny Arcade Report and Erik Kain of Forbes' gaming coverage section got into a bit of a tiff yesterday on Twitter. I don't much care for Kain since he's basically the poster child of entitled, know-nothing gamers the internet over, and I think Forbes' gaming coverage is pretty shit even by the already-low standards of gaming journalism, so I made a couple tweets to that effect.

Kain ended up retweeting me and apparently 4Chan's /v/ hates Kuchera and anyone who supports him so I've been getting hate-tweetz pretty much all day. It's nothing much for me to get worked up about, but this latest one made me laugh a bunch (https://twitter.com/Lobust25nk/status/296882952439201792) for some reason. Maybe it's the tortured mutation of my twitter handle? I dunno, enjoy

EDIT: Apparently it was GiantBomb that had a big ol' hate-on for Kuchera, not /v/

So a friend texted me today to say it was N7 day, which is some kind of Mass Effect thing. I was curious if there was any kind of experience bonus or some shit if I played that game today and searched for the Mass Effect page. Turns out the "Mass Effect 3" page with just shy of 90,000 likes is some kind of fan bullshit ran by some nutcase who signs every post with a link to their twitter profile. I clicked on it, interested in what kind of person who bother to do this. Several hours later, I go to twitter.com to say something dumb and find out this person is a suggested tag no matter what I do.

If I click on the "compose new tweet" box this happens:
http://i.imgur.com/FGQGfch.png

The only way to get another name pop up under there is to type in "@" and then someone I actually remember's username. It's pretty lame. Anyway, I'm probably going to have to get a new twitter profile or some shit. I know this will be hard to accept, what with all the interesting things I'm constantly saying on it.

Do you have the same problem with twitter on your phone or another PC? It might be a problem with your PC/browser rather than your account. Maybe try clearing cookies and cache if you haven't already.

I get that problem sometimes. It goes away randomly, either from refreshing Twitter, restarting my browser or signing out and then back in.

I don't know if this is on Charles Randall or if Fermun's joke had already been anonymized by the time he saw it. Seems pretty lame to watch something you made immediately come back uncredited on the same website though!

Title: Re: Twitter

It was an image that had been going around on the 10th, I didn't make it first, and it had been made fully anonymous by the time I saw it, so was unable to give credit anywhere. As such, I just made a joke about it in a tweet and called it good, without trying to fit in any disclaimer that I was not the originator.
