dude is really doing it (http://www.cinematical.com/2010/08/11/john-landis-son-attempts-blair-witch-esque-superhero-movie/)

wait was this dude on pwot or something?

Title: Re: hey guys remember uptomyknees
Post by: Wibblewobble on August 11, 2010, 04:04 pm
Yes, yes he was.

He'd been vaporised from PWoT when I first went there, but he was still horribly, horribly active on Jay's forum when I joined that.

Quote
The piece is about three teens from Portland who head out into the woods and come in contact with a strange substance after which they develop superhuman abilities. They mess around and get used to their new powers together for a while, but then end up turning on each other when personal and family issues get in the way.

All done in a Blair Witch shaky-cam style.

That sounds original derivative.

Yes, he was a dude that got himself banned from pwot a number of times, then moved to Jay Pinkerton's forum where he got banned a couple more times. The guy was absolutely terrible. He was a teenager, but it wasn't just teenager horribleness, it was more.

Toward the end, it looked like guy shooting the vid was still shooting it in situations where someone wouldn't still be shooting it. Is he some kind of pathological impartial observer? That would be different.

That's actually pretty common, I'm told.  For some reason looking at something through a viewfinder makes it a lot less scary, and so apparently the immediate impulse to run the fuck away from terrifying things is seriously lessened.  I hear.

That actually looks pretty awesome, but please stop using the Blair Witch filming method, film directors who can't read this, because the tropes of it are getting annoying.

There's nothing wrong with cinema verite to convey a sense of verisimilitude, but yeah, there's only so much you can do with the "home movie found footage" style before it gets repetitive. Instead, we should be finding innovative ways to revinvent the style, like how District 9 handled it.

Title: Re: hey guys remember uptomyknees
Post by: HyperGlavin on October 30, 2011, 03:00 am
For me, the main gripe with the style is that the cameraman must be a character in the story (or at least there should be a reason why a cameraman is following everyone), or else my suspension of disbelief is ruined. That and it's harder to concentrate on detail.

I just read about him, he's apparently the son of the director of Animal House and Blues Brothers (original and sequel).

I guess I'll see how it's rated before I watch it though, it didn't look like anything that would blow my mind (or penis, for that matter)

This comes out on the 2nd of February. I have added a poll about this movie to the topic.

Title: Re: hey guys remember uptomyknees
Post by: Honest Abe on January 28, 2012, 10:10 am
i think this movie will be bad. not like underworld bad, but bad in that it seems to be taking a pretty common movie/comic book conceit and not doing much with it. it looks good, but max is young yet, and i think his passion for writing and movies will serve him well in the future when he and his skills mature, but it's not likely that this will be a great movie. i wish him the best and will probably check this out once it's netflixable. i might even support it at a theater, but i don't get out to theaters much anyway.

edited for translation and clarification: i'm old, and this just isn't my bag anymore. but even for the target demographic this doesn't look fun. it looks overly wrought and angsty. i don't expect a dude's first film to break new ground, especially a dude like max, but i'm hopeful this will be successful enough for him to continue.

Title: Re: hey guys remember uptomyknees
Post by: Nicol on February 03, 2012, 08:43 am
I liked it.

My biggest issue was always going to be how they handled the "found footage" aspect. At the start I grudgingly accepted that they were going to do the same old clichés. The other characters berating the main character for carrying a camera around with him in order to suspend my disbelief; it's dark and the camera has night vision, but everything is green - and so forth. Somewhere along the line the film decided to pleasantly surprise me. In the second half the filming technique facilitates the intense climax and is licensed by the type of film this ends up becoming, making a pleasantly unique take on "found footage".

(click to show/hide)

Let's get to UTMK's role. The plotting of the film is perfect, and more inspired by a superhero origins story than anything else. It's a lot of fun at the start, mostly due to the endearing characters, yet there is a morbid and violent undercurrent that gradually intensifies until the only way the film can end is in a violent explosion. Although the pacing was great, the writing was not so great.

And it doesn't even pass the Bechdel Test!

Cons: It was overwrought and lacked an ending.

On the balance, it was an above average movie and I give it 9.75 stars.
