Title: Creative Works
Post by: Zach on March 08, 2010, 08:24 pm
Are you a creative type? Put stuff you've created in this thread, and maybe some other creative types will talk about it with you. Maybe they won't though, but don't get discouraged! Maybe next time you'll do better.

Does it all have to be creative drawings of art with pencils?!

Because one time I I filmed a thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHO_vm-9nEw) that took very little creativity. I have also filmed other things.

It can be anything you make! Like the time I won a bowling tournament and made a thousand dollars. Funny coincidence, EH?

That was pretty good BondFiction. You seem 100 times more comfortable on camera than the rest of the cast. And there were several parts that were real funny. Especially the bowling line. I've always wanted to do video stuff, but I lack a camera, lights, friends who are into making videos, and charisma of any kind.

That was hilarious.

Whoever played that Preston character really sucked though; you should fire him.

I'm writing this story (http://www.strangersinthebrain.com) twice a week. I have been told that it is not terrible!

also I'm at work right now but will watch the hell out of BondFiction's film this afternoon.

I contributed significantly to this video, both by being in it and coming up with many of the ideas for situations that happened in said video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6oMOhFrCZ0)

If anyone is wondering, the glasses on and off again thing is 100% homage to Doom House 2000 (http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/9203/detail/), and has nothing to do with CSI Miami.

This is also the only remotely creative thing I have ever done.  I have no creative talents.

I wrote a radio essay in 2009. You can listen to it here. (http://www.myspace.com/loudclear) It won an award with the production place, but it's a bitch to explain.

It's titled 'Giving Up, But Not Giving In', and is written by Liz (me). It's the first choice on the play thing as right now.

I'm a musician, and therefore am required to make music or else they'll revoke my license. Over the summer I recorded an EP's worth of songs, all by myself (because I am very handsome and talented).

http://www.myspace.com/mikegraymikegray (http://www.myspace.com/mikegraymikegray)

I also used to have a band. But I ate and killed them and stole their instruments.

I have only one creative outlet that is at a point where I can share it.

My Band, well it's more of a project between my cousin and myself. (http://www.myspace.com/endlessluna)

"Pictures of Saturn" seems to be the general favorite, followed by "Not Fear, But Something Like It."

Maybe if I finish my story, or copyright my game I will share them too.

Does being dumb enough to try and start a farm count as a creative work?  How about blogging about it? (http://reluctanthippies.blogspot.com/)

And yes, I know the title is god-awful, just the worst thing ever.  But I have been trying to think of a title since August, and that's the best I could come up with.  I got to the point where, if I waited any longer, we would have already failed at farming and I wouldn't have anything to blog about.  Suggestions welcome.  I've already thought of:

The Journeyman Jackasses
The Asshole Agriculturalists
Two Jerks Who Are Throwing Away Their Baby's Future on an Trite and Asinine Pipe Dream
Farm Blog

The bottom drawer is on rails and has a foam insert to hold my guitar, and the big doors open and slide back into the body.

I am working on some Warhammer 40K space marines currently, but I am basically speed-painting a shit-ton of them and they are not up to my usual high standards. For reference, the figures in the pics are maybe 2" tall

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Melancholic Goat on April 13, 2010, 02:09 pm
That's neat work mabudon. How long have you been painting minis? I haven't done it for years now but I'd like to think I was approaching your standard around the time I stopped, that was after 2 or 3 years of working at it (painting comes as naturally to me as adblocking does to He Who Shall Not Be Named).

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: mabudon on April 13, 2010, 02:13 pm
Thanks mgoat- I have actually been painting for almost 30 years but I took some LONG breaks. I have a bunch of much more impressive stuff that I somehow have never taken decent pics of. I tend to do better work on non-commission stuff, I didn't have my own vision for these pieces and merely painted them based on research, so they aren't quite as good as my truly inspired pieces, but I am real pleased with how they turned out nevertheless.

Why'd you stop painting, goat?

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Melancholic Goat on April 13, 2010, 02:16 pm
Well I stopped playing (this is 40k, with a sideline in Necromunda and Gorkamorka) around the time I went to university and now anything GW-related is waaaay out of my price range right now. I understand the GWAR stuff is cheaper so maybe if I find myself with some disposable income and nothing else within arm's reach that is purchaseable I'll pick up a brush again.

Hot damn. You guys are badass visual art warriors.

I mostly make silly little songs. Salvaging the Scraps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wshCenZ7zU8) is probably the most annoyingly catchy one, and it has a sexy music video.

Also, I'd like to get into animation this year, but the only thing I've made so far is this short, psychedelic cartoon about mustache vending (http://www.explodepantsmusic.com/mustache.mov).

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Wibblewobble on June 16, 2010, 04:44 pm
JB, that moustache thing was fucking mad and technically excellent. I like how all the sound effects and what-not sync in so well.

Me?

Apart from the photoshops I spam incontinently around forums, I don't do much nowadays.

But about 15 years ago I used to make silly music in old-style MIDI with an old-style sequencer program.

(And a decent but cheap pressure sensitive keyboard, which is still awesome and I've still got, but I doubt if the MIDI connector will work with modern USB type stuff).

Anyway, I kept some of those old songs as mp3s when I trashed my old computer. Here's my Wagnerian orchestral version of Creep:

NYFA is pretty good.  It's cheaper and easier to get into than say NYU and that comes across a little.  The higher ups are pretty focused on profit so the equipment and how much access you have to it aren't as great as it could be.  In my experience though they have a bunch of really good teachers.  I love my directing instructor for example.  I am glad that I am here.  A+ would enroll again.

How long does it take your PC to render the finished result?

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: nameinuse2 on February 14, 2011, 04:22 pm
Yep wibble, they're done with mandelbulber (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mandelbulber/) and take ages to render.  The 2 minute loop in the chlorine fossil one took about 90 hours in the end.  I only do really small frame sizes on my computer and use bigger machines at mumble mumble or in the amazon cloud to render the full sized ones.

I made this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PznRBT09BpU) a while ago and finally got off my lazy ass long enough to upload it to YouTube last night (I then sat back down on my lazy ass and haven't moved much)

The editing is incredibly shitty, but most people who have seen it have been at least mildly entertained by parts of it. And I like the look of it being thrown together in an afternoon (which it was, pretty much).
If anyone knows of any decent, reasonably priced video editing software for PC I would like to hear about it.

It's fun to hide words in butterflies. This one says Believe It.

So I got my hands on a pound of Super Sculpey clay, and now I'm a sculptor. I started making this thing that's supposed to look like this when finished

It will never quite look exactly the same, the clay didn't come with any actual sculpting skills.

This how far I am now. The cap and hair is just a mock up to see if its worth continuing. Still lots to do.

That's a seriously great Tank Girl sculpture. I love the texture you've given to the wool inner-side and the sheepskin outside of the hat.

I'm sure you know there's a lucrative market in collectibles, but for the hours you put into a one off like that, the returns would be negligible.

Next time, make a mould!

Another gestural abstraction. This is one of the first times I've ever been this satisfied with something I've done. Also one of the first times I've felt like I've actually made art beyond just drawing or painting a picture. I'm very happy with this.

This is something that struck me at 3 am. I'm probably gonna hate it when I wake up, but that's hours from now. It's a short story, but I have no idea what it really is, yet. Mangle away if you want. I'm still at the stage where I think everything I write is gold, and that usually implies that it is actually shit.

--

The morning was dark and cool. The air stale and old. It tasted of ozone. This close to the city and everything began to taste of ozone. The city was tainted. The city was dead, but within the dead city stirred a life, of sorts. Peter had seen that life, he had, in fact, lived that life. That life had cost him dearly, and by the end he had hoped never to return to the city. He had put the city and its “life” behind him.

But of course, addiction  never let go that easily. Peter might have been through with the city, but the city had not been through with him.

They made contact with him on a Monday. The job was supposed to be easy; get in, get the cash, get out, but in his world easy was never simple. There was always a catch, and this time hadn't been any different.

“Look Peter. You gotta know I didn't know. I had no idea she'd be working the place.” The she was his ex-girlfriend, they had not parted under the best of circumstances—he had her pressed against a wall, a simstick jammed into her ear—and he had heard she was itching for an opportunity to get even. If this heist didn't go off without a hitch, Peter might be looking at a hard ten.

Ah, here are the first 11 (give or take a couple sentences on the 12th page) of a screenplay I'm working on. I don't know, I guess I'm looking for some sort of validation. Something that says, "You're on the right track" or "Where the fuck are you? The tracks are that way."

I wanna know if the first 10 pages grab you.

The key is to look at the pictures then go "man, I could totally do that on a proper tablet with a stylus not my stupid phone and stupid fat fingers."

Then you never get either of those things and you can't technically be proven to be lying to yourself.

I made a video game!

Ok, so it's a little rough.

I've been making guitar noises (http://soundcloud.com/seclude) again.  They're mainly sketches, live-loop noodling things.  My self from 15 years ago would straight up kill me for the gear I have now, and myself now would straight up kill the me of 15 years ago for the chops I had then.  It's gradually getting back there though...

This is a creative work, I guess. I made a website for my flatmates and I to divide up and keep track of bills.

It's very simple, and if YOU, forum user, live with and share bills with anyone, and would like to try it out, give me a message.

Sure hope you didn't write that website in BBcode

(you didn't include a link)

I didn't, because without a login there's nothing to see.

Edit: Yeah I should put in a demo instance

Ha, I didn't actually read your whole post, especially not the part where you said someone should message you if they want to see it.  I guess I shouldn't put "attention to detail" on my resume.

There's much worse mistakes to make when reading that post, Lee. I doubt I'll ever get over the terrifying experience of applying scented lotions to rak's doughy, undulating body.

I've been making guitar noises (http://soundcloud.com/seclude) again.

I listened to Drama Llamas, that's definitely film soundtrack music, maybe for a stake out or the prep for a heist scene.

Sloth is like the sort of ambient thing I tried to make back in the day, but (as you say) 15 years ago the kit just wasn't available.

my brother is an artist and I've just finished up most of the work helping him redesign his website, which you can see here:

http://www.timsebianlander.com/

I am particularly fond of his Omar:

...in part because I have the original hanging in my living room. but all of his work is excellent. this Katy Perry (http://timsebianlander.com/?p=317) thing is stunning to me.

As some of you may remember, I stopped working in IT and have gone full-steam into pursuing my passion: Art. In May this year, I started a contemporary fine arts gallery. Our opening exhibition is in October. But, yesterday, our website went live, and I'm pretty fucking chuffed with it.

I know it's not my stuff per se, but the guys and girls we're featuring are fucking kick-ass (we'll obviously be adding more as time goes on). Enjoy it (http://www.underculturecontemporary.co.za)

That's a pretty awesome website and really want to visit it. In the meantime I will tell the people from my office who get to go to Cape Town on secondment to try and make time to visit if they can. (I understand it's on the opposite side of the country. But fuck it, they'll do what I tell them to if they know what's good for them)

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Joseph Nistal on December 13, 2013, 09:47 pm
That's really well done! Just wondering, have you tried using layer masks so only the animated parts change each frame? I can't confirm if you already have and would think that might help you dramatically reduce the size of the image if you haven't tried that yet.

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Metsfan on December 13, 2013, 10:00 pm
I actually did for that one! Layer masks are hella useful and I was even able to fix a few typo's with little grief because of them. I work with a friend of mine who helps me with a lot of the technical stuff. What we wanna do to improve the frame rate and lower the size is to do the whole thing in PNG files and just have them repeat over each other. This comic was a final project for one of my digital classes though, so after a long time of working on it this is what was most readily available to turn in.

Seriously though, great stuff. Autopsy and Shoggoth hit me right in that primal part of my brain that makes me feel uneasy. I'd love to see the details on those up close.

I like them the size they are, fuck anybody who changes them!

if so how much to commission a lovecraftian family portrait

Thank you very much (again), guys. And, yeah, feel free to use anyone of them as desktop backgrounds. If the resolution isn't high enough, message me and I will see about sending you a bigger version.

As for selling/buying, I managed to sell a few thus far but more sales are always welcome. Haha. I'm currently studying the prizes to ship a few over 'cause two got bought out by visitors (the European kind, not the anal-probing kind... actually, I don't know if there's a difference).

As for a Lovecraftian family portrait, I never considered it but that could be fun.

I wrote some shit that I want your opinions on because I hold you all in the highest of esteem. Plus, you guys will tell me exactly how shitty my poetry is.

The Last Ballad of Rico Tubbs

The whole town gathered round to watch
On the day they heard Rico Tubbs would get got
The story goes, the story goes
Rico, that man of right
Crushed under the maw of order
Crushed by that system that takes a man and buries him
Deep, deep, deep down under the skin of a pig

Rico Tubbs thought he'd left vice behind him
Under the heat of the Miami sun
Rico Tubbs thought he'd finally left it all
That stupid man had even left his gun

Fool men--tool men
Sent to splatter the brains of a scarecrow
Stupid men with sticks of lead where intestines once rested
Nobody knows the trouble they've seen
The sorrow they've left in their wake
Baked under the misty rays of lying sunlight
Their hearts, like little pieces of tin, splintered once held too tight
These are the men that came for Rico

Rico, Rico, Rico
The call was put out
Rico, Rico, Rico
We're thirsty
Only blood shall drench this drought

Rico heard the call and prepared to run
For he was an old man
No force behind him--at his side: no gun
So he ran and he ran and he ran
Like rivers of cold blood
And then he met the ocean

Rico; stay still
Rico; easy kill
Rico; life will
Rico; bullets drill

Rico's dead
Those bastards done freed a cop.

Quote

The line "For he was an old man" tastes wrong. Needs an extra syllable maybe?

For he was old, but still game?

I passed on all your comments, guys, thank you so much for taking a look. We've recorded another cover and a couple of original songs too.

The cover is 'Hood' by Perfume Genius, who I'm kind of obsessed with at the moment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dGHroKVi8E

This is 'Prophet of the Rose & Crown', an original song about a barfly in an English pub:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv8AS1p2Vvc
This was the craziest to shoot because of limited space in our apartment- we didn't have sandbags to keep the tripod steady and I definitely bumped into it at least twice in between takes of the wide shot and shifted it out of position. I was able to stitch it all together with a little post-production witchcraft, though, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

And this is 'Strangest Joy', which is a straight-up heartbreaker. This one's also original, about growing old and watching your partner also grow old and slip away. It slays me, don't listen to it if you don't want to cry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVX3cKft3L0

So much of my experience in the past five years or so is just at a desk, editing and compositing, so it's been fun to get behind a camera again and dealing with all the on-set issues. All of these are live sound, too, no lip-synching, though I'm looking forward to doing some artsier videos with a pre-recorded track.

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Wibblewobble on March 18, 2015, 03:54 pm
The chord sequences in 'Strangest Joy' is brilliant, unexpected and haunting. I like it.

'Prophet of the Rose & Crown' is the one I like best here, with great old-fashioned piano playing.

Technical question, Betty; when you multi-layer images like in 'Prophet of the Rose & Crown', wouldn't you get problems with the background getting over-exposed?

Title: Re: Creative Works
Post by: Bettytron on March 18, 2015, 09:32 pm
boron, I think Tim might take you up on that! I think you guys are facebook friends, that's probably how he'll be in touch.

Wibblewobble- good question! Each layer/instrument is shot separately, and I used a compositing program called Nuke (though it could also be done in After Effects or even Final Cut, just not as easily) to draw masks around each Tim and layer them that way (the piano plate is what I used for the background), so it's not a multiple exposure or anything like that. Basically the way you can select something in Photoshop and copy it to another layer? Like that, but with video. I hope that makes sense!

We had two cameras- one for the wide shot that we kept in the same place the whole time, and one for the close-up of each instrument, and Tim was listening to a guide track from an mp3 player (you can see the wire for the earbud in a couple shots I think) so that as he played each instrument it would sync up, and Tim mixed the different instruments in Cubase afterwards. It took probably five or six hours for the different camera and mic setups and getting good takes of each of the four instruments, and there were windows at camera left, so to eliminate problems with changing light we blacked them out with garbage bags and just used practical lighting.

Thanks so much for your feedback guys. I really appreciate it and know Cam does too.

Title: Re: Creative Works

The technique in 'Rose and Crown' using the layer masks is a great style. A difference matte using a static background shot may help with easier Tim selections, but I'm no expert.

Fantastic songs and videos! Subscribed for more.

I love a good difference matte! In this case, the Tims never overlap (by design) so a feathered garbage matte was definitely the quickest method. And I think the background of multicolored book titles might have complicated a difference matte, so if they did overlap I'd probably have had to just roto it anyway. There are always a bunch of ways to approach something like this and usually the specifics of the shoot determine the best one! Thanks for subscribing too, it is hard to build a ~web presence~ so every bit helps.

Back in January I went to a cool fighting game tournament and filmed/edited a recap video for it.

Hi guys,

So I recently did another self-portrait

And I have also finished a body of work for my first solo exhibition, opening next week. You can see the works here (http://www.cedricvanderlinden.co.za), under the Latest Works gallery.

Consider it done.

Damn, that's a lot more difficult than it seems. But fun! Did you do the soundtrack too? It's very cool!

Post by: Kybard on August 11, 2016, 07:49 pm
nah, the soundtrack I found online made by a dude who makes royalty-free music

I was gonna go with not having any music but then thought that music was pretty awesome and fitting when I playtested using it, and so ran with it

Hi guys,

As you may or may not know, I'm a painter. I do OK and have been showing my work around the country quite regularly (www.cedricvanderlinden.co.za). I'm looking to exhibit outside of the country.

I know that this channel isn't really suited for that, but I thought I'd ask... Do any of you work with galleries, or have friends who do? Local places that show work?

Let me know if you do. Just asking :-)
