Title: The Best Albums, 2017
Post by: Kybard on November 28, 2017, 10:13 am
it's that time of year again where we compare subjective experiences of music to see how differently we rank the year's best records

just kidding it's not subjective, the winner is St. Vincent, MASSEDUCTION

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9TlaYxoOO8

last night I saw her play this entire album front to back and it just confirmed how wall-to-wall brilliant it is, how perfectly it's put together as a cohesive whole while still containing standout individual songs and moments, and also how much she rocks

runners up, mostly in the category of "oh jeez I guess I did not listen to that many new albums this year":

I appear to have missed new albums by, just in the category of bands I already know and love: the xx, courtney barnett and kurt vile, lcd soundsystem, lorde, the national, tracy bonham, the new pornographers, the dap kings, and probably a shit-ton else

so I guess my runners up list is open to some personal debate/expansion.

the winner, however, is not

your turn

Royal Blood went a bit too angsty for me this year. Also, it turns out I have a lot of 2017 albums saved on my Spotify account so my list will be a while yet

the new album didn't really click for me until I saw them perform a lot of it live, which probably isn't entirely fair, but whatever

Humanz and Scum Fuck Flower Boy were the only two new albums I listened to this year so those are probably the best ones

album: Charly Bliss - Guppy
description: 90s style pop rock kinda stuff, very catchy shit & fun lyrics. also the guy who voiced Dash in the incredibles is in this band, oddly.
song: Charly Bliss - Scare U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2GZT5f4J7U)

album: All Them Witches - Sleeping Through the War
real cool stoner rock kinda stuff
song: All Them Witches - Don't Bring Me Coffee (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1taF_8gMp0)

also King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, they're putting out five albums this year though, Villains of course, Tyler Childers - Purgatory (country music, his other stuff is better than this Sturgill Simpson produced album though,) Algiers - The Underside of Power, Mastodon - Emperor of Sand, and probably a bunch of other stuff too

Instead of just relisting albums already named, I'll try something different and list what I think the best Buckethead Pikes were this year. Buckethead, the virtuoso guitarist known for Jordan on Guitar Hero II, has a long running series of albums he calls "Pikes". Thus far he has released 273 Pike albums, 29 of which came out in 2017. They range from face melting shreds (buckethead's calling card) to, melodic, bassy, acoustic, to metal and everything in between. These were my favorite from this year in no particular order.

I mostly "discovered" old stuff this year but I found time for a couple of new albums so here we go with the definitive list of albums released in 2017 I enjoyed listening to in 2017 and probably also still in 2018 too and maybe even more years because I really enjoyed these albums:

The Tim Cameron collective fucking lost it when they figured out how to make mephedrone in the bathtub and started doing bloated ninety hour rock operas about the different properties of decay of the penis gristle of the variant zombie races
