Title: The New Releases (Film)
Post by: Nicol on February 27, 2012, 03:49 am
The point of this thread is to broadly introduce and discuss films that will be coming out in cinemas in the near future. I will be bringing up a lot of films as they come into Australian cinemas, but luckily these days many American films are released in Australia at the same time.

We're going to be talking about a lot of movies in this thread. Feel free to bring up something that you're looking forward to. If you feel a release will be worthy of its own thread you can ignore this thread and create a new thread for it. If we get many posts on a specific movie, we'll split it out.

But as it stands we're not having very much new film discussion here and this thread should help create some.

First up, the Snowtown Murders is coming out in cinemas in the USA next week. It was released in Australia about a year ago. This film has a solid/morbid script, and the two male leads are great newcomers. It is based on a true story about a deranged individual who destroys many lives, and the kid who he takes under his wing. Snowtown is a small town outside of Adelaide, the capital of my state, where they found bodies decomposing in barrels of acid in an abandoned bank.

Shame is the second feature length film by Steve McQueen (not that Steve McQueen). It was out in cinemas here last week. It's good, but very depressing. It's about a man whose entire life is tailored to his sex addiction. When his sister comes to stay with him unannounced, he realizes that he has a problem. Much like my last recommendation, this is an emotional, depressing film, and boasts good writing and acting.

Miss Bala is a Mexican film released to film festivals in 2011, and just recently released on DVD. It's about a beauty pageant hopeful from Tijuana who is captured by a Mexican cartel and pitted against the DEA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g357MHuj8WE

It's a very stark and gritty film. The director utilizes a lot of long, static takes and tons of tracking shots so if that's your thing, then visually this is right up your alley. The style also lends itself to the slow pace and helps keep you in the main character's shoes. I definitely recommend you do a watch on this movie, especially if you're into crime thrillers and good foreign shit.

So The Avengers came out, I don't know if you guys have heard about it. It's got all the great superheroes like Steel Dude, Handsome Patriot, Hammer Bro, Smasher, Hot Girl, Cyclops Man, and Jeremy Renner With A Bow And Arrow.

Basically throughout the whole movie all I could think was "Holy shit this owns" and I think you should watch it. The plot is pretty standard rate comic book movie stuff but the action scenes are ridiculous and it's just a blast to see all the Avengers onscreen at once. Also Whedon doesn't over-Whedon the script and make it too cute or referential so that's good.

Plus,

Go for the balls-to-the-wall action, stay because a man with a helmet with deer horns on it calls Scarlett Johansson a "witless quim".

Lawless

I have high hopes for this one.  Screenplay by Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat, I think the last time these guys teamed up was on "The Proposition" which I enjoyed very much.

Although it stars Shia LaBeouf, I can't recall a single film that he has been in that I enjoyed.

Also Tom Hardy trying on another unusual accent for size.

75% on RT.  For comparison, "The Proposition" is at 87% so maybe my hopes are not so high.

I think this comes out in the U.S. in the next day or so, but I won't get to see it (in Australia) for a Month or two.
If anyone has seen it, is this worth catching at the cinema?

I've seen it. To sum it up, some of the storytelling and characters could probably be improved on, but it makes up for it with lots of kick-ass cowboy shoot-em-up action.

End of Watch

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf2K9GzgiF0

I saw a prescreening of this tonight and goddamn is it good. I was expecting some kind of cop action movie but it's way more than that. It's funny as hell when you listen to Jake and Michael banter in the car, and it still gets crazy emotional and a couple times pretty fucking disturbing when they get into all the gang violence. (Also I met Michael Peña at the screening and he was a pretty cool guy. Like a mexican Mark Ruffalo.) Heads up though if you get motion sickness from shaky cams or whatever be prepared for an extreme amount of it during the more intense scenes.

So yeah see this shit when it comes out.

I did a watch on The Master today. Sat by myself in a theater with a bunch of old men. It was hella good. Great lead performances and beautiful cinematography. Wish I'd seen it in 70 MM. It was very abstract and open-ended and in that way I dug it more than There Will Be Blood because it opens up a lot more discussion about its themes and meaning.

End of Watch

I saw this the other day and I thought it was pretty good. The plot seems a little aimless at first but then things you thought might be totally incidental wind up becoming important and the story kind of starts to gel together. I thought it developed in a fairly realistic and organic way that's pretty interesting and not like any other cop movies I can think of.

The acting and writing were both extremely good. You almost forget that the two leads are acting. Their dialogue is so good and natural that they really disappear into their characters.

My only gripe is the shaky cam. It's actually used to good effect in a few scenes, but the rest of the time it's split between tolerable and really annoying. Overall it was a good flick though.

Okay but was it like good good or sappy, white-washed manipulative Spielberg good the way the trailer makes it look?

Title: Re: New Releases (Film)
Post by: EFHRK on October 16, 2012, 11:18 am
I thought it was good good. Pretty much every big name actor in it (and theres a fuckload of em) gives a great performance, the story has some good high and low moments, and everything just looks fantastic (classic Spielberg-style).

It's a lot better than War Horse if you want something to compare it to.

Saw Seven Psychopaths yesterday. Still trying to figure out what Martin McMcDonagh was trying to say with the movie. I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed In Bruges, which was a gem of a movie, but it wasn't a bad movie either. The first two-thirds of the movie was hilarious and suspenseful in equal measure, but the last third was just weird. In spite of the performances, which were all excellent to watch (Sam Rockwell is some sort of a genius), I think the point of the movie went over my head.

My wife and I went to see Argo tonight and really enjoyed it.  I'm probably going to buy the book of the actual story because even if half of it is real it's still too awesome to be real.

I saw a ton of awesome stuff at the Chicago International Film Festival. Here are the best ones I saw. If you can find them, you should watch them:

The ABC's of Death

26 people were given $5000 and a letter of the alphabet. They were then told to pick a word starting with that letter and create a short film based on that word. Some of them are pretty dumb. Others are fucking hysterically funny. The rest were intense as shit and frankly kinda hard to watch. Overall, pretty fuckin cool. Also, it was rated NC-17 and for good reason.

(There's no official trailer, but here's one of the shorts in the film to give you an idea.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCmMebE0pIg

Maniac

Elijah Wood loses his fucking mind and stalks and scalps a bunch of women. Oh and almost the whole thing is shot in the first-person. Super violent and supremely insane.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPdzB1oGifw

Holy Motors

I have absolutely no fucking clue what this movie is about, but I was completely captivated throughout the entire film. It's visually stunning, wonderfully acted, and just generally pretty goddamn strange. It's definitely a must-see film, and I challenge everyone to figure out what the fucking plot is.

(This trailer gives you no clues whatsoever)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQJrVEgOPRk

Any Day Now

This is probably one of the saddest movies I've ever seen and holy shit it was so good. I was honestly not expecting much of it and it ended up being one of my favorites of the festival. It's about a gay couple in the 70's trying to get legal custody of a young boy with down syndrome from his abusive, drug-using mother. So yeah get ready to want to kill yourself when it's over. Also Alan Cumming is in it.

(No trailer unfortunately. But trust me go see it)

Antiviral

This was definitely one of the weirdest films I've maybe ever seen. Like I can't even describe one part of it without describing all of it because the whole thing was just fucking weird. No one even clapped when it was over. Everyone just looked around whispering "Jesus christ what the fuck was that movie." but you know, in a good way. Fun fact: All of the needle injections in this movie were real. So that's fun.

I think Maniac is a remake of this hidden gem (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081114/). I saw it on Netflix Instant like 6 months ago, not sure if it's still there or not. It's pretty rad. Slow, intense, and full of cool 70s snap zooms

I wouldn't be that harsh on it. It's low budget and they cut most of the book and the relevant story suure. And sure the actors are kinda bad, the people who are playing john and amy are playing a one dimensional character so bad it's almost sad suuure. And sure the effects were seriously horrible and plasticy. And suuure it basically has almost no connection to the book and they make john an even bigger deus ex machina, filling the movies with holes he can handily fill in.

Uhm

forgot where i was going with this

Yeah, it stripped away the rather incoherent plot of the book but left it pretty lifeless, not replacing much of the narrative humour with much in the way of actual dialogue that was funny/interesting. All the characters are pretty flat cliches. Some interesting visuals, I may have laughed once.

Worth watching once, it was alright.

Bullet To The Head is fun. It felt like a TNT tv show, but with no commercial breaks and lots of questionable camera work.

Khal Drogo was cool and not very fleshed out. Stallone was Stallone. It's not the best written movie, but most of the action was cool.

It is very predictable.

You know a picture's derivative when a list of titles in the same genre technically constitutes a spoiler. It's not so much that these films provide the picture's DNA as that Kosinski uses them as his personal cinematic ATM.

Saw a trailer for this during This Is The End (which was fantastic). It basically looks like it'll be an hour and a half-long commercial for the Shelby Cobra.

"Though originally reported to be a remake of the 1972 film The Getaway which starred Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw,[1] the film is actually an original story.[2] It is also not based on The Getaway (video game) and the hit Mark Cherry single."

Watching the commercials, it does look like the most horribly racist thing in the past 10 years.  But I looked it up and supposedly all of Tonto was done in consultation with the Comanche tribe to make it realistic and representative of their culture.

So ironically, the perception that it's racist is actually the result of ignorance and lack of education about the people.

I'm going to assume most of the pull for this film is just the fact that Johnny Depp is in it

They asked about that complaint as well and supposedly Depp has Cherokee heritage.

Look I have no idea what's what with this movie, and I have no intention whatsoever of seeing it, nor any real motivation to defend it.  I was just surprised that when I looked into it, there's more sensitivity than my uneducated reaction the commercials suggested.

Reading up on the justifications that a historically racist media conglomerate used to put a famous white actor in redface to sell the remake of a racist intellectual property is hardly educating yourself on all the nuances of the issue.

Here's a review by a blogger (http://nativeappropriations.com/2013/07/i-saw-the-lone-ranger-so-you-dont-have-to.html) who specializes in representations of Native people that's pretty illuminating. She's written a lot about the film and about the efforts of the filmmakers to talk to actual Comanches. It sounds like in spite of their good intentions they still relied on a lot of hoary, damaging tropes and writing a really stereotypical character. Intentions definitely aren't enough.

Title: Re: The New Releases (Film)
Post by: Johnny Roastbeef on July 08, 2013, 06:58 am
She apparently doesn't specialize in sensitivity to any other cultures though.
Quote
Also general Tonto comments: Depp’s “accent” is hilariously inconsistent, and whenever he has more than a few words to say, it would veer into an almost stereotypical Italian-sounding thing

"he speaks broken pidgin English, you know, like an Italian!"

Title: Re: The New Releases (Film)
Post by: Bettytron on July 08, 2013, 07:14 am
I think that's just a misplaced hyphen- she's saying he sounds like stereotypes of Italians, not that he sounds stereotypically Italian.

Title: Re: The New Releases (Film)
Post by: Johnny Roastbeef on July 08, 2013, 07:36 am
The former usage is actually the insensitive part, anyway.  The "stereotypical" Italian accent is actually considered pretty hurtful for historical reasons.

It would be like describing someone wearing baggy pants and gold chains as looking like a "stereotypical black kid," completely failing to recognize that the stereotype you're describing is used as a way of discriminating against those people.

What argument are you talking about? Nothing I said about it hints at defending the movie. I pointed out that the sensitivity discussion contained a pretty insensitive statement. That's pretty sad. End of story.

It has nothing to do with whether or not The Lone Ranger is racist, though from the blogpost of someone who actually wasted the money on seeing it, it certainly sounds like it is.

ignoring the nativeness or lack thereof of depp, there is no way the lone ranger isn't a problematic piece of media. using a culture that was the subject of genocide and whitewashing which is ignored for our entertainment, the design of the tonto character which was taken from a white man's depiction of natives (http://www.sattlerartprint.com/artist.html), and disney's long running habit of making horribly racist bullshit is enough to make that point.

no one cares if you (general) want to see it, or if you do see it, or if you enjoy it when you see it, but trying to argue against the inherent racism and cultural bastardization is a ridiculous stance to take. many have made better arguments about this (see betty's link and the rest of the articles on that site about the lone ranger) so it's kind of pointless to just regurgitate them in a clumsy fashion as i have.

The World's End.

Probably on a par with Hot Fuzz, but not as good as Shaun of the Dead. A decent few laugh out loud moments, but not as many as I was hoping for, and it seems like it didn't have the same level of detail as the other two, where every seemingly minor thing pays off at the other end of the film. That said, I've seen HF and SotD many times, so once I see this again it'll probably reveal more detail.

Edit: this should probably be in "today I watched".

Fuuuuuucking hell.  I never attached any significance to the names of the pubs at all, but that's such a classic Pegg/Wright thing to do.

I watched The World's End yesterday having seen no trailers or previews of any kind, even avoiding all but the most bare-bones ("it was good" "I thought it was funny") discussion of it, and I think that was the best way to see it.  Getting increasingly confused and spending the first half-hour wondering if this is really going to be a coming-of-age pub-crawl comedy drama is an integral part of the experience.

The Great Beauty is good, not strongly plot-driven but enough humour and good things to look at to be worthwhile. It's basically a criticism of super-rich people in Rome. It's by Paolo Sorrentino and makes me want to watch his film about Andreotti.

It's polarizing the critics which means it'll be difficult and interesting.

Don't forget that we (Americans) get to experience this hair this weekend.

Man, I was disappointed with The Counselor. I've been seeing it compared to Killing Them Softly, which I loved. It's not an unreasonable comparison, both are ostensibly crime thrillers that anger/will anger general audiences because they were expecting more action and less philosophical discussion. The difference to me is that the characters in KTM felt like real people discussing real things and from there the themes of the movies could be read. In The Counselor, the characters act more like symbols and bluntly discuss the themes of the movie.

My only experience with McCarthy is The Road (book and movie) and No Country For Old Men (movie) and in those there was obvious symbolism but the characters still felt like people and acted like people. Except I guess Anton Chigurh but he was presented very much as a force of nature. I wonder if the weirdness I felt about the movie was a symptom of this being his first screenplay. I dunno. Good acting all around, pretty pictures, but the writing didn't do it for me.

Quote
The film centres on a Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a woman living in Taipei, Taiwan, who works as a drug mule. The drug she inadvertently takes goes into her system, changing her into a metahuman[4] She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can't feel pain and other discomforts.

Starring Min-sik Choi from Oldboy in his first English speaking role.

Here Are The 2014 Oscar Nominees (http://oscar.go.com/nominees)

BondFiction's sexy predix:

American Hustle for Best Picture (3 horse race with Gravity & 12 Years A Slave)
Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor (pretty open race, but I demand another victory for the MCCONAUGHSSANCE)
Cate Blanchett for Best Actress (lock)
Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor (lock)
Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress (i don't see any nominee upsetting her)
Frozen for Best Animated Feature (pretty much a lock, but brave beat wreck-it ralph last year which was horse piss so who knows)
Gravity for Best Cinematography (Sorry Snips :( Roger Deakins will lose again)
Alfonso Cuaron for Best Director (it's either him or russell. and then likely whoever wins this, their film does not win best picture)
The Act of Killing for Best Documentary (i mean c'mon)

Gravity wins all the visual effects and sound stuff (seems like a lock but idk), U2 wins that original song bullshit (old white dickheads have to give U2 the award on principle right?? i'd like to see pharrell win), Her for best score (really surprised Hans Zimmer wasn't nominated for anything he did, especially 12 Years), Before Midnight (please) and American Hustle win the screenplay awards. Who cares about the rest of that crap

Quote from: VIN FUCKING DIESEL
“I’m just excited, and happy, and I’m shouting out to you guys to say thank you. Universal just called me and told me that Riddick is number one on the DVD charts. There’s no way in the world Riddick would have been made without you guys, you know that. You guys have been a part of our page since 2012 and remember how arduous a road it was to get the movie made, and to make it rated R, and to do it with such a low budget. It’s a win for all of us and I really, really, really, really thank you so much. Yeah, I’m excited, and of course, Universal’s also saying they want to develop the next one.”

Our RoboCop Remake (http://ourrobocopremake.com/) is the most delightfully strange and funny concept I've seen in a while.

Quote
Our RoboCop Remake is a crowd-sourced film project based on the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic. Connected through various filmmaking channels (including Channel 101) we're 50 filmmakers (amateur and professional)  from Los Angeles and New York who have split the original RoboCop into individual pieces and have remade the movie ourselves.  Not necessarily a shot-for-shot remake, but a scene-for-scene retelling. As big fans of the original RoboCop, and as filmmakers and film fans admittedly rolling our eyes at the Hollywood remake machine, we've elected to do this remake thing our own way.

Meh. If they can avoid an overly heavy handed NUCLEARS ARE BAD thing like it looks like might be the case, it could be a fun weekend flick, but I don't have enough like for Godzilla for that to even tug at nostalgia strings.

In related Fincher news:

He dropped out of that Steve Jobs biopic because Sony wouldn't pay him $10 million and let him control the ad campaign (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/david-fincher-steve-jobs-movie-696044?utm_source)

I'm actually disappointed they're going with the T-1000 again. Watching T2 for the first time, you just think "Jesus, how do they destroy an indestructible Terminator?" Now I'm just waiting for a pot of molten metal for Korean Terminator to be lured into.

but then again, I won't say no to a "greatest hits" parade of past Terminators. Old Arnold versus Young Arnold should be fun to watch.

Other than Jai Courtney, who, in the trailer at least, is terrible (would it really have been a problem to just recast Anton Yelchin? Because he nailed it in Salvation), that looked kinda fun up to a point.

But it became increasingly obvious that all they're doing is rehashing Parts 1 and 2 with lots of CGI while trying to wipe those out of continuity. I mean, it could still be good, but at best, I'm expecting something on the level of Terminator 3 (fairly entertaining on its own and with some cool scenes, but a terrible Terminator film).

THE BIG DAMN JANUARY MOVIE PREVIEW

January is typically good for one of two things in Hollywood - dumping grounds for movies studios are hoping to make a quick buck off of, or being the month Oscar bait films get their wide releases. 2015 looks to be no different, so let's take some time to sort through the good stuff and the crap. Hit the spoiler tag for more:

If you go through the top 10 new films from this year based on amount of money earned, there is only 1 original film, which is Interstellar, and even that is, "from the director of the Dark Knight Trilogy". The rest are remakes, sequels, or franchise films. I kind of hate people who ramble on about movie earnings as a mark of film quality because look at this goddamn list:

Nightcrawler and why movies don't need character arcs (http://badassdigest.com/2015/01/09/film-crit-hulk-smash-nightcrawler-and-why-movies-dont-need-character-arcs/)

Things to note:

Gone Girl shut out almost completely

Nightcrawler shut out almost completely, most notably Best Actor. But hey he's some British motherfucker donning Hawking-face

Selma shut out almost completely. But hey, it was a good morning for white dudes! #Blessed

The LEGO Movie not nominated for Best Animated Feature, get way the fuck out of town

Go Ida

Roger Deakins (The Deak) nominated for TWELFTH Oscar, has never won, will surely lose to Emmanuel Lubezki

I've been hearing a lot of behind the scenes stuff about this movie, and apparently it's supposed to be super awful. They've been hiding a lot of set photos and not doing big press because the studio is ashamed of it. Someone said that it makes the first Fantastic Four movie from 2005 look good. The only reason this exists is just so they can hold on to the character rights, like Amazing Spider-Man.

There were a lot of spots for movies during the Super Bowl. Only three of them were good:

Jurassic World looks like fun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mvWuky1g0g

Brad Bird's Tomorrowland will hopefully be great.

And then....my god. Then there's this. It brings a tear to my eye.

You can find the rest here. (http://comicbook.com/2015/02/02/all-super-bowl-movie-trailers-in-one-spot/) There's a spot for the truly awful looking new Terminator film and a spot for the sequel to the movie about the teddy bear who jacks off.

I love how IMF is basically the source of all evil in the world. All these movies (except one, I think) feature bad guys who are former IMF or double agents within the IMF. Now the IMF is disbanded, because Jesus Christ, but now the bad guy is an entire agency created specifically because of the IMF. I love it.

Yes, I first heard about this on XKCD, which is mostly terrible. The excitement about this, though isn't. I took the book out of the library and finished it during a long plane ride today. This movie was pretty much targeted exactly at me. It looks like the awesomest space nerdity on film since From the Earth to the Moon.

It premiered at TIFF and early word is promising:

collider

Quote
Hardcore isn’t a perfect movie by any means, but it is a rip-roaring 90 minutes of firepower, action and carnage, and an unprecedented cinematic achievement. Naishuller may have made a name for himself with this GoPro-style action, but you don’t keep a packed theater cheering for an hour and a half by leaning on a gimmick.

hollywood reporter

Quote
With Henry on a mission to rescue Estelle from Akan's clutches, the movie's main plot engine is a full-throttle chase from downtown Moscow to a secret laboratory in dense woodland outside the city. This bravura marathon of POV action involves frantic parkour, gunfights, flamethrowers, airships, streetcars, helicopters, tanks, exploding heads, and a predictably massive body count. The constant shaky-camera momentum and adrenalized pace becomes a little wearying in places, but the special affects are superbly executed, while the audacious sight gags come thick and fast.

the whole movie is in the trailer and Thanos looks bad.

I really don't see that at all. The trailer never shows Thanos with all six stones, there's so much unexplained stuff in it, and any of the original main characters could be killed off. The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers pretty much laid out their entire hand, but not this one.

Also, I think Thanos looks fine.

It sounds like you do understand people saying he looks bad, you are just justifying it to yourself and really you should learn to love yourself more.

But yes it looks like the same shitty cgi they used for him before and I guess I thought they would put more effort in for the movie hes in for more than 30 seconds and especially in daylight looks pretty dumb. Still time for them to polish it up though.

Anyway the movie looks fine or whatever you cant really tell anything from the trailer apart from needlessly telling you some minor plot points, I hope its not as badly written and dumb as the last avengers, civil war had a lot of characters but still had a smooth/good plot by really just focusing on a few and using the rest for one big action scene. Also it had an interesting villain which im not sure we have this time. I hope they take the same tact/lessons from that anyway and all the others featured are glorified cameos or just there for a few plot points. I am assuming the guardians at least wont actually come to earth and just be there for space thor stuff at the start and jet off, as that seems like the first character overload problem.

But I assume it will probably be fine, most marvel movies at this point are pretty good, simple dumb fun to a formula with lovable characters. The clusterfuck of this being what they worked towards for so long with now so many threads and characters could negate that though. But if its bad I will get to pwn nerds online like Nav/Bsam who insist its not, so win win really.

They do come to Earth. The leaked trailer earlier this year showed scenes with them around all the other characters.

But if its bad I will get to pwn nerds online like Nav/Bsam who insist its not, so win win really.

I don't just give every superhero movie a pass like certain people (EFHRK) insist I do. As an example, I saw Justice League the other week and it fucking suuuuucked.

No. Saying he "looks bad" when we've see him on screen twice before seems to be a judgment of his execution rather than his design or concept, and there's a difference between those. The concept of Thanos as a big purple space man was dumb in the comics and looks dumb on screen because a big purple space man just looks dumb. But the actual execution of CGI Thanos as a big purple space man in this instance looks totally fine.
